While the talks are in "an early stage," according to an article from the Wall Street Journal, nevertheless, this represents the second major media outlet today that is reporting the story, the first being Variety. Quite clearly, no deal is set in stone just yet, but if it were to happen, this would represent a clear and present consolidation of major video streaming services under one company, not to mention the possible integration of Google services as well.
Twitch.tv, while a massive streaming platform for gamers and representing 44% of the total market share for livestreaming worldwide as of April 7th, does lag behind powerhouses such as Google and Netflix in terms of actual video content delivered. If acquired, this would likely mean that Google, in addition to domineering the video game streaming market, would be able to diversify their streaming options, as they famously streamed the base jump by Felix Baumgartner a few years back.
Once again, this does not represent a done deal, but as it does involve a very large portion of the game community these days, and one that all can enjoy, we will report on any future updates as they develop.

I think, as far as the whole ad revenue with Twitch is concerned, if you play ads while on stream, they won't show up in a recorded video, which people can later add to youtube. If they're partners on youtube, however (I think you need one video with about 10k views to get offered), they can run ads at the start of videos.
As far as how this deal might possibly change that, I dunno.

Well down goes Twitch then. Also isn't it setup on YouTube that if you do play sessions and then put it up on YouTube you can't earn ad-revenue from it? Meaning that on Twitch all the ways people earn money on it (I don't know much about how Twitch works though), will go away now if YouTube gets it?

That's precisely the problem

The big thing I saw people talking about online was the worry that if it does happen, that Youtube's content matching system would be implemented, killing a lot of streams that play music while they play games.

Please don't let this be true
