When Exclusive Means Universal
Warframe is now a PlayStation 4 exclusive, according to the latest press release from Digital Extremes. At least, that's the way they're advertising it. The particulars of the deal paint a rather different story. Digital Extremes' Creative Director, Steve Sinclair, had the following to say on the matter.
"With how the industry is evolving, this really is the Player Generation. Games are reaching players hands in so many different ways now and Sony gets it, which is why we are bringing Warframe exclusively to the PS4™ first. There's no reason not to download Warframe on day 1 if you're an action game lover – it's free!"
A quick look in my marketing BS/English dictionary informs me this translates most closely to "they gave us money". The press release puts it as follows:
"Digital Extremes announced today that Warframe®, the fastest growing Free-to-Play game, will be exclusive to the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system."
With the header being all about the console exclusivity. When what they actually mean is that Sony will have it three months before everyone else.
"For three months starting at launch on November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe, PS4™ system owners will get first crack at being a space ninja. Announced at PAX Prime in Seattle, one of North America's largest consumer tradeshows for games, Warframe is playable for all attendees at the Sony Booth #1222."
We here at Pixel Judge aren't in the habit of ruffling feathers, but when something this blatantly misleading and, frankly, disgustingly dishonest, comes our way, we feel it's time someone held up a finger and asked, "ahem! wtf are you talking about?"
It's Microsoft and the "Splinter Cell is an XBOX exclusive" shenanigans all over again. Only, this time, it isn't the console manufacturer making the claim, it's the developer. And it is, frankly, childish and extremely unprofessional. This is exactly the kind of behaviour which perpetuates the growing schisms in the video game world.
Shame on you Digital Extremes.
Shame on you.

I hate it when they try mislead about exclusivity... But at the same time we all know what drives this marketing move... It is the console consumers who base their console choice on the number of exclusives a console has
