Washing on Valve

Did you know the Washington Post, of all people, spoke to our Lord and Master in November of last year? Well, neither did we until they wrote it up and published it at the end of last week. Unsurprisingly, Gaben had a lot to say about a lot of things. Let me stress that point, this is not light reading and, Gods help us, this is only half of it. The second part arrived this Monday, and is just as lengthy, so you might want to grab yourself a comfy seat, a large pot of tea and an ample supply of biccies before setting out on this magical journey.

Even thinking about trying to sumarise a diatribe this momentous is...well, I would say it borders on insanity, but that would be a gross understatement. I must stress, there is a hell of a lot to digest here, but it is a fascinating read that any PC gamer cannot afford to pass up. We all know, of course, about Valve's 'flat' internal structure. But even that was something we didn't fully appreciate. Reading through everything, what really struck home to me is the immense respect Gaben has for his staff. For example, Valve do not track sick days. Period. They work when they work, and credit their fellow staff with being mature and responsible enough to manage their own days.

That is something entirely different and it goes a long way to adding context to everything that Valve do. A fascinating read indeed.
