Total War's Smart AI

One of the most integral pieces of a game is the AI. Why, without it we wouldn't be able to hole ourselves up inside all day playing Skyrim. What a crime!

Total War: Rome 2's battle AI programmer, Julian McKinlay answers some viewer questions in the above video. Mostly the fans seem concerned about AI repetitiveness. Will the AI camp certain places, will they keep killing off imperative characters in the game, stuff like that. It's quite interesting what the team for Total War: Rome 2 seems to be doing with the AI. They want to make it so that the AI works dynamically, and that it still works when the game gets modded. McKinlay explains that hard coding in certain things for the AI to do will not allow the AI to react to anything that the player throws at them, specifically mods.

The task seems enormous. For an AI to be able to predict things and react to almost anything would require a lot of work. My bet is that there will be some glitches come launch day but the team should be able to work out the kinks over time.

Even CA say that this will run much better than Shogun 2 I have my doubts as well seeing how the game is still messed up. Especially the MP sync problems.
