Tomb Raider Makes 6 Million Sales
It wasn't long ago that I recall Square Enix saying that Tomb Raider's sales were disappointing. Flash forward a year and suddenly Tomb Raider's 2013 reboot seems to be kicking butt and taking names, racking up a cool 6 million sales. Maybe people just needed a little time to realize that it's a pretty stellar game?
In an open letter on their Tumblr, Darrell Gallagher, the head of the studio, said:
"By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance,"
Gallagher also stated that Tomb Raider is getting dangerously close to being the best-selling Tomb Raider game. "This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on!"
Tomb Raider '13 being the top selling Tomb Raider game wouldn't honestly be that surprising. Aside from the fact that it's an great game, there's a lot more people playing Video Games these days. A game getting 6 million sales in a year back in 1996 would be monumental. These days? Something like that might not be quite as crazy. Of course I don't want to make it seem like 6 million sales aren't impressive, that's a pretty ridiculous amount and the devs deserve every penny.

I understand the publisher's constant push for high sales figures for the first few weeks and months, but they REALLY shouldn't go out in the press and whine about the sales not being so good when the game has only been out for a little while. Highly unprofessional.

So Sqaure have learned their lesson right? Not hitting sales targets in two weeks doth not a financial failure make?
Right?
