Let's face it people, whenever some people do a nice thing, someone or some group of people have to be dicks and ruin it for everyone. Well this following story is no different to countless ancient and modern tales. Wadjet Eye Games was doing a very kind deed for fans and gamers in general by giving away free Steam Keys for The Blackwell Deception.  Nice deed, right? Well the turning point of this story is bad eggs started to farm these keys for the purposes of re-selling, which forced Dave Gilbert, the president of Wadjet, to pull the plug on the promotion and placing it upon another website. Unfortunately, this caused a backlash from people and problems didn't stop here after an estimate of 30,000 keys were stolen.

"It almost instantly led to a large number of angry emails and tweets," Dave Gilbert said to Red Door Blue Key. "Even though it was a free game, it's almost as if it didn't count because it wasn't going in their Steam library." Dave then discussed with BMT, who were the sales provider for this promotion, to limit the keys to a 1 key per IP system. This didn't work as determined scum started to use different tactics of changing their IPs and using proxies.

It gets worse, after hosting the promotion again on a different website and provider, and then pulling the plug again after a further 20,000 were stolen, BMT removed the link to the key generator, but didn't terminate the key generator itself, which caused more keys to be stolen overnight in the process.

"The outpouring of support on twitter, Facebook, and email has been nothing short of heart warming," says Gilbert.His opinion of BMT hasn't been hindered by this incident and comments that "their service was never intended for anything like this. It was just too much to deal with, and there was only so much effort I was willing to put into a free offer."

There you have it folks, when there's someone out there prepared to do a good deed for people, there's always dicks out there that'll ruin it for everyone else. Again, this is why we can't have nice things, because there will always be someone who takes advantage and abuse the system until something is implemented that ruins it for the honest and upstanding crowd.
