The Vanishing of Ethan's Vanishing

You remember The Vanishing of Ethan Carter right? No? Maybe some hazy memories from times of yore. Well, it has been more than half a year, so you'd be forgiven for being unsure what I'm talking about. It's the one about the psychic detective, no, the other one. By The Astronauts. Funnily enough, I was thinking about this just last night, as I was drifting away to the land beyond the clouds. Wondering why we hadn't heard anything about it for so long, fretting that another superb idea would be lost to the vagaries of the ADD twitch generation.

But no, today, finally, we can come back with screenshots, new plot/gameplay details and, even, a prequel comic. That, methinks, is most certainly worth the wait. The images themselves are absolutely gorgeous. The focus on making this a PC title is abundently clear. The lighting and mist (as best can be judged from still images) effects are superb, the draw distance is not something to be scoffed at and up close...I can see moss and lichen on those rocks! But that's not even the best part. Get a load of this.

"Via a First-Person Perspective, you explore and interact with the environment in order to discover the truth. Paul has a supernatural gift that allows him to visualize the final moments of anyone who's been murdered. The more clues you discover, the clearer and longer Paul's vision. Exactly how much you are able to discern from a corpse is entirely up to you. You might discover the motivation of the murderer, or find a hint of where to go next – or both.

"The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a "weird fiction" horror, meaning our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters. With its mixture of a beautiful world with the haunting and macabre, this story is for adult players. That said, there is no combat in our game. If our game leaves any scars, you won't be able to see them. Also, we want gamers to experience the story of Paul and Ethan at their own pace, and without the need for sedatives. It's less about pure terror and more about clammy unease."

Might, you might! Now, I know that's intentionally vague and intended to grab your attention so as to make the game stand out...but it worked. Still nary a mention of fighting things, this is a straight up investigation. And that, dear reader, is something the industry is in dire need of. Wouldn't you agree?

I know what you mean. I had modest expectations for it too. Not that it would be bad...but dayum!
