The safehouse is exactly what it sounds like it would be. It's your own personal safehouse. It's only a singleplayer mission at this point, where you can enter a laundry and take a secret stairway down to your own personal armory. Inside, you'll find a firing range, rooms to test out your drills, C4 charges, ECM jammers and various other equipment, trophy-walls for your weapons and masks, and - easily the most satisfying - the vault.
Check out the video above for a nice demonstration. Payday 2 is set for release on August 27th, and my preview is already up.

That actually looks very cool. I still have to visit my own safehouse though but I have nothing to show for.

But it COULD be

Well of course it won't be any more than paying something to have some furniture added in a specific spot, or the place tidied up, etc. It's not a safehouse-editor simulator game. :P

That certainly hints at at least some degree of customisation. Even if it's only as far as pay X to get Y additional bit

That might happen, though. When you enter the vault, the voice-over-man-guy says something along the lines of "maybe once you get some more money, we'll fix this place up".

Even better if they allow, like, customisable furniture and heist mementos and stuff

They REALLY need to make it possible to join other people's safehouses, like you could in Dungeon Defenders. I want to show off my mask collection! I'll be a mask crusader.
