The Grim Controls Have Now Been Fixed
Grim Fandango, now that is a game from the past. This classic graphic adventure was released by LucasArts sixteen years ago, using the famous SCUMM engine. In the game you controlled Manuel 'Manny' Calavera (with Calavera being Spanish for Skull) as he pursued Mercedes "Meche" Colomar through the Underworld.
While I loved this game and spent many hours playing it, the one thing that always let it down for me was the controls. Manny was controlled using the up and down arrows to move forward and back, respectively, with the left and right keys to turn left and right, respectively. This was very slow, not precise and not being helped by the fact that the camera was fixed. This meant that every new scene entered, you had to get a feel for the controls all over again.
Now thanks to a new mod developed by Tobias Pfaff, the game should play like a traditional point-and-click adventure. Tobias said that "The game should now [be] 100% playable with mouse only, but the mod is not well tested yet." In my opinion, this new mod should add new life to the old title, but there could be bugs due to lack of testing. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I will dig out my old copy and actually try it and see how it plays. You will need a copy of the original game to play it, and the mod is available here to download.
