The Angriest Fantasy: FF13 Arrives on Steam with Complaint
Amidst nearly no fanfare, Final Fantasy 13 has arrived on Steam, and in response, the Steam forums and elsewhere are alive with the sound of rage, it seems. Previously, we'd reported that Square Enix had talked about bringing the trilogy to the platform oft forgotten by many Japanese developers, and with the other two games in the trilogy coming to PC by Spring 2015, it appears as though we too can experience one of the most divisive entries into the series yet.
But not all is well on the PC front. As the game was originally released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms, the game appears to have been a straight port, bringing with it the joy of 720p and a locked 30fps framerate. There are also some other oddities too, such as the Escape key instantly exiting the game, instead of bringing up the menu, the game being nearly 60GB in size (apparently due to the dual audio options), and the Xbox 360-quality cutscenes, instead of the higher quality PS3 ones. Predictably, the Steam forums have been set alight with rage, with the top thread currently sitting at nearly 1000 posts, as of writing.
Not all is lost, however. Durante, made famous for making the Dark Souls PC port more than a technical abomination, has already begun work on unlocking some of the features hidden away by the game, already releasing a version of his client that allows for custom resolutions (to a point) and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It's not exactly what people are demanding, but it's a start. The state of the game may yet change as the weeks progress, and hopefully these same issues won't be present on launch for the next two games in the spring.
