Square Enix to Become First UE 4 Licensee

By NeonAnderson24-10-2012

All video games start with a foundation, this foundation has to be strong and has the potential to limit or free the developers in what they can do with their game on that engine. As such, this news will come as a shock to many competitors of Square Enix, as they have successfully made a deal with Epic Games to become the first licensee of the Unreal Engine 4!

The UE 4 is selling itself as a revolutionary new engine that will push the boundaries of games. As Mark Rein, Vice-President of Epic Games, puts it:

“People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4”

Under this deal, Square Enix will have full access to both the UE 3 and 4 engines to develop multiple games on in the long run.

Haha, yeah, but that's the way it goes. The market is consumer driven and the money is equally on PCs and on consoles. I'm not too bothered by it, if the market was fully PC driven, we'd need to buy a new GFX card every month lol! So in a way it's good that consoles "hold back" PC graphics. As then developers need to find other ways to be creative and make fresh experiences while just improving graphical performance on existing technology. Thus allowing graphics cards to last a good 3 years now before needing upgraded.

And if it wasn't for Consoles, who knows, we might have had this in games a year ago.
