SimCity AMA Turns Sour at Always-On DRM

Maxis held an AMA discussion on Reddit last Friday. Some of the better/most asked questions were about mod support, the game’s target audience, and building density. While the devs answered many questions, most of the discussion on the board turned sour when talk about the always-on DRM came up.

Like other recent releases, SimCity will require a constant internet connection to play the game whether you play alone or with friends. When asked in the event of losing connection the developers said:

“We will allow you to play for as long as we can preserve your game state. This will most likely be minutes.”

As you can guess the community didn’t like this bit of information with many stating they wouldn’t buy the game due to the DRM. One poster wrote, “I’m really sorry, but I cannot support an online-only game”. Another voiced his concern about living in a rural area where his ISP “simply cannot provide a stable internet connection”. He went on about wasting money on Diablo 3 because he simply couldn’t play it because of its DRM.

Hopefully EA will realize this is a mistake and remove the DRM. Many people are pledging to pirate the game because of it. Ironic since that’s what it’s supposed to prevent. But as most of us know, it’s not going to stop piracy. It may slow them down a few days, but give it a week after release and there will be a hack to run a local server to play the game offline.
