Scrolls Development Has Ceased

Citing a dwindling playerbase, Scrolls, the strategy/card-collecting game from Mojang, has effectively ceased development with its latest patch. Though Mojang boasts that tens of thousands of players played daily, it's clear that the numbers simply weren't enough to support the game any longer. This comes as a surprise, as the game was effectively launched out of beta only on December 10th of 2014, leading to approximately a six and a half month period in which the game was officially “released.”

At the very least, current Scrolls members will be able to play the game until July 1st of 2016, giving players a full year to enjoy the game, and all further proceeds garnered from the game will go towards supporting the server life as long as it can be sustained. Personally, I haven't played the game, and that's probably partly due to poor marketing on Mojang's part. In fact, the last time I'd heard anything about Scrolls was during the Bethesda/Mojang debacle, where Bethesda sued Mojang over trademark rights on the word “Scrolls,” obviously related to “The Elder Scrolls.” Following this, nothing seemed to pop up about the game, and unfortunately, this has clearly hurt Scrolls.

Mojang does, however, have something to celebrate, with Minecraft on PC having surpassed 20 million sales. This, plus another 20 million on Xbox alone, achieved last month, means that Minecraft might very well be the best-selling game of all time, someday. As of writing, nearly 7000 more people have purchased the game since the 20 million mark, ensuring that sales of the game have no intention of slowing down any time soon.
