School Is Hell

By BloodyFanGirl22-06-2013

Roguelike, action RPG Our Darker Purpose follows the strange occurrences that happen after all of the teachers disappear from Edgewood Home for Lost Children boarding school. Players must guide Cordy as she goes up against cardboard creations, dangerously demonic desks and the new Lord of the Flies-esque hierarchy the other children have fallen into on her quest to reach the administrator's office at the top of the boarding school. The game feels a bit like a mish-mash of two great, recent roguelikes, Don't Starve and the Binding of Isaac. Check out the trailer video above.

Our Darker Purpose comes from Boston based Avidly Wild Games. The developer has set up a Kickstarter for the game which is already halfway towards its end goal of $40,000 and, at the time of writing, has 6 days left to go. Founder of Avidly Wild, David Roth, said, "Right now we don't have plans to release if we don't hit funding, though to be honest, it's not something we've given much thought to. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it (and hopefully we won't)."

David Roth and his development partner, Will Wu, had originally worked on Our Darker Purpose as a grad school project and had been funding it out of their own pockets. Roth explains why they created the Kickstarter, saying, "little by little, we realized we were putting way more time into it than on school, and we decided to try to make it real. We're on Kickstarter because, coming out of school, we don't really have the personal resources at this point to take this to the level that we want to."

Avidly Wild says that inspiration for the game came from the aforementioned Binding of Isaac, as well as A Link to the Past and Diablo. The game is to be released on PC if it meets its funding goal but the developers haven't ruled out bringing the game to Mac and Linux as well. Be sure to check out the trailer (above) and the Kickstarter page. The game also has a Steam Greenlight page so help these guys out and vote this game up.
