Project Reality 2 to be Stand-Alone

For those unaware, Battlefield 2's Project Reality modification recently reached version 1.0, after many years in development. I love Project Reality. From being a simple damage-tweak in the early days, to the full conversion with new weapons, vehicles, factions, maps, modes and gameplay mechanics, it has built itself up to something quite astounding. But now that the mod is essentially "finished", looking to the future is a logical thing to do. So where does the future take these avid modders?

Well, seeing as Battlefield 3 and 4 won't be getting mod support anytime soon - modding being a "dying trend", after all - that leaves a new mod out of the question. Instead, the modders have taken to using CryEngine 3. But Project Reality 2 will be no Crysis mod! It'll be its own stand-alone game.

"Project Reality 2 (or simply "PR2") will be a free to play multiplayer FPS PC game, based off of the critically acclaimed Project Reality modifications for Battlefield 2 and ARMA 2. Unlike our previous projects, PR2 will be a completely standalone game that will require no retail game to play."

"Project Reality 2 began in mid 2012 and is being created completely from scratch using Crytek's next generation game engine, CryEngine 3 SDK. This powerful engine provides tools able to create many stunning features to recreate and improve upon what you as Project Reality players have become accustomed to."

Though it sounds great that they are using CryEngine 3, it does bring with it certain challenges and restrictions for such a small team. Especially considering how their plan is to make it free-to-play. I mean, have YOU seen any large scale war-games made in CryEngine 3 lately?

"Initially, Project Reality 2 will be a small scale, infantry based FPS with a comprehensive weapon handling system that will aim to be as realistic as possible."

Ah yes, so no pilotable jets and helicopters to begin with. Still, it's an ambitious project, and one I personally will hold a keen eye on. Though the game is currently in a very early stage, we've still got some screenshots for you to gloat on. Check them out in the gallery below.

Well I'm honestly a bit disappointed by how it's supposed to start off with only infantry. I mean, what exactly will then separate it from the bulk of modern military shooters?

We'll see, maybe it won't be such a long wait.
