Pipeline For Teenage Games Developers

Those lucky bastards...oh! Hi there. *Ahem* So, what we have here is another experiment of Valve's. Hardly surprising, I know, I know. Even though more games are currently being added to their Trading Cards system of sheer trickery whilst their Summer Sale rampages on, these guys just can't help but keep themselves busy.

But what is Pipeline? Well, this one's quite interesting. It's aimed specifically towards teenagers who are interested in a future as part of the videogames industry - whether that be a particular area of expertise like art or sound design, or an as of yet undecided field - and hopes to equip them with the information they need to get a head start when they leave high school. How they'll be broadcasting this information is through video series' on specific subjects, interviews, and behind-the-curtain peeks at what work is like in Valve themselves, I'd assume.

The only question, partly answered by their "Pah!" to non-idleness, would be why Valve are doing this. As the site, designed by some of the teenagers in the video, explains:

"Traditionally Valve has been a very good place for very experienced videogame developers, and not so good at teaching people straight out of school. Pipeline is an experiment to see if we can take a group of high school students with minimal work experience and train them in the skills and methods necessary to be successful at a company like Valve."

It sounds like a pretty neat idea to me and, as someone actually wasting their life studying games development at University, I'm more than a little interested to see just how in-depth it is. Let us know what your thoughts are too, in the comment space below. We should be finding out more in the next couple of weeks, but you can, in the meantime, sign up for a periodic newsletter at the website and we'll of course update you on further developments when they're made.
