Patch 5 Live, Brings Playable Selucids and Workshop Support
Total War: Rome 2 had a pretty rough launch. In hindsight, developer Creative Assembly admitted that they did indeed goof around on that, and promised to fix the issues in weekly patches.
Though the four large patches have fixed a whole lot, the game is far from fully functional even now. In fact, I'm playing the game's cooperative campaign with a buddy right now, and not one hour ago, we had to shut the game down and reload a previous save, as a result of the game simply getting stuck on us. My friend had finishes his turn, pressed the 'End Turn' button, and.... nothing. The turn was never passed around to me, and we had to exit the game without saving. Good stuff!
A lot of gamers are experiencing similar frustrating bugs and problems like this with Rome 2 even today. Creative Assembly seem to understand that customer satisfaction is kind of important for the franchise's survival in the long run, so in hopes that tempers will settle down a little, they've released a new content patch along with the scheduled weekly update fixing bugs and improving performance. The official announcement states that the Selucid faction is now made playable for the singleplayer and multiplayer campaigns.
"This content update includes new unique Seleucid units, building and technology trees, Campaign Objectives and the Paradise of Daphne; a unique new wonder."
Not bad. We, I playing as Sparta with my friend as Macedonia, are in the process of coordinating a joint strike to exterminate the Selucid from the face of the earth in our game. That is, if we can get it to work after the recent desynch.
In addition to making the Selucid faction playable, CA have also finished up work on the Steam Workshop support, which has now been released and is ready for modders and mod-lovers worldwide.
"We've been working closely with some key names on the modding scene to offer original Workshop content from day one, such as the incredibly talented Radious, who has crafted some of the finest mods available for Total War. That's not all for modding support, though – we're consulting closely with the community and are looking to host another Mod Summit soon to gather opinions on what we can do next for Total War: ROME II to further unlock its modding potential."
It's at least good that they are supporting the mod community. There are developers out there, that I can't say the same for. Modding is a dying trend, yeah right...
Anyway, the fifth patch itself addresses the typical stuff you've come to expect. Improving on the battle- and campaign AI, increasing the framerate count all around, fixing bugs and balancing the game further, CA are aiming to make the game, well, closer to worth the asking price. Now let's hope my game isn't broken, because if it is, I might have to sharpen my Spartan Javelins and order a flight to England...
