New Cross-Platform Service Play Low On Games

Microsoft announced its new cross-platform service for Windows 8, Play. "Xbox games on Windows," is what Microsoft is pitching it as. But looking at the games available it should be changed to "A handful of Xbox games and games that came with your OS for Windows."

There aren't many games available, but here you are:

4 Elements: Special Edition
Adera
Gunstringer: Dead Man Running
Hydro Thunder Hurricane
Ilomilo+
Microsoft Mahjong
Microsoft Minesweeper
Microsoft Solitair Collection
Pinball FX2
Reckless Racing Ultimate
Rocket Riot 3D
Skulls of the Shogun (coming Jan. 30)
Taptiles
Toy Soldiers (not playable on Windows RT devices)
Wordament

While the launch selection may be low, the future doesn't seem too bright either. "Although there are some XLBA titles available on Windows 8, we aren't announcing anything specific about migrating all of them, so be sure to get your hands on some of our exciting new Windows 8 games like the highly rated adventure game, Adera!"

With the slim selection, I don't think "exciting" is the right word here for Play's launch. This isn't the first time Microsoft has pushed for cross-platform support. They tried something similar with Windows Live around the time the Xbox 360 was coming out for Windows Vista only. With Play having so few titles, and the prospect of more coming not looking well, and the fact it's Windows 8 only, the future of Play isn't looking well if history is any indication.

For those using Microsoft's new OS, what do you make of Play?
