Need for Speed Rivals Powered by Frostbite 3

EA just announced a new Need for Speed game; it will be called Need for Speed Rivals and will be powered by the Frostbite 3 engine. Rivals is being co-developed by Criterion and Ghost Games.

While not much is known yet about NFS Rivals, what we do know so far is promising. Starting with the core of any game, its developers, the game is being developed by Criterion who also developed the 2012 NFS Most Wanted game. It is being co-developed by Ghost Games, however their involvement is related to the usage of the Frostbite 3 engine, as EA tasked Ghost Games with optimising and shaping the Frostbite 3 engine for racing games.

NFS Rivals will be released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 19, 2013 and will be released later this year for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. According to Ghost Games' Executive Producer Marcus Nilsson, the PC version will look "easily" as good on the PC as on the next-generation consoles. The reason for the lack of a set launch date for the next-gen consoles is probably because neither Sony and Microsoft have an exact launch date yet for their consoles.

The first key feature revealed so far is that NFS Rivals will have something called "AllDrive". This mechanic will automatically place you in a multiplayer game with your friends "on-the-fly", perhaps similar to the co-op paring system of Dead Island. What it currently sounds like is if one player is racing or involved in a chase and a friend is as well and the two player's paths will cross, the game will recognise this and place the players together, as well as shifting objectives and scoring automatically to co-op mode. This feature is also already confirmed as available on all platforms.

In addition to all this, it has also been revealed that you can once again play as cops! Which for me personally is a big plus as it was what I enjoyed so much about the old Hot Pursuit titles.

Is NFS going to be a yearly franchise too?
