Minecraft Story Mode - New Details, but Still as Irrelevant as Ever
Telltale, the developer for the new Minecraft based standalone game, have released some more details about the upcoming "Minecraft Story Mode". So the exciting news is: Players can choose which character to play as, and choose the gender of their character too.
Yeah I thought the info was a bit lacking too... So after a little digging I can tell you that
Minecraft Story Mode will be a choice based point n click in a similar style to Telltale's 2012 game "The Walking Dead" (and everything else they do ~ed).
MC Story Mode will be released in five individual episodes, the first later this year. Prices are unknown as yet, also it will be released on various platforms; PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Mac, iOS and Android-based devices.
The Walking Dead, is the game that really put Telltale on the map, and from that standpoint Microsoft made a good choice for developer of their episodic Story Mode. I've no doubt that Story Mode will be a decent game, even a fun game, simply because of its developer, but that's not the issue that MC fans have with it.
Whatever other details arise about Story Mode's mechanics, the game will still be a separate standalone game to Minecraft, and have little relevance to your experience in the real Minecraft.
The thing that is obvious to fans of Minecraft, is that the decision to make this Story Mode, was made by some exec who has no idea what makes Minecraft so special. It was a decision made solely around making money, because Minecraft's name is big, and so is Telltale's, so this game is going to make them money.
It's possible, that somewhere along the line a Microsoft marketing man read a bit of player feedback from MC fans, when trying to determine what the fans wanted, and that person read "needs a story", because Minecraft does need a story, everyone who plays it knows that.
Let that sink in a minute...Minecraft needs a story...
Well it still doesn't have one!
Minecraft will get no extra mechanics, no extra characters no extra content or story that is relevant in any way shape or form, because "Story Mode" is a completely separate and completely different game. Mojang have even said that "Story Mode" is merely an interpretation and not in any way official lore.
I'm not surprised at this missed opportunity, the game that highlights the failings of AAA developers better than any other, by being the exact opposite to everything they stand for, is bought by a AAA developer, and immediately failed by that developer. The whole thing is like some kind of ludicrous satire.
