Though the Witcher series of games has long been the tale of Geralt of Rivia and his unnatural knack for finding himself embroiled in conflict, CD Projekt RED has announced that there will be a second playable character in Wild Hunt: Ciri. Described as "the ashen-haired girl from an ancient prophecy," she is fleeing from the Wild Hunt itself, a legion of spectral riders with the power to cause immense devastation, and the Empire of Nilfgaard, the most powerful political entity in the world of The Witcher 3.

Though you're not able to switch freely between Geralt and Ciri at any given time, when you do switch over to her storyline, it will be at story-critical moments, which serve to further define the plot, and offer an alternative view on the world Geralt is in, as he searches for Ciri. According to CD Projekt RED, she will also have a different playstyle to Geralt's heavy-handed approach to monster murder. She's fast, light on her feet, has the ability to blink, and a deeper, hidden power within. With the announcement that The Witcher 3 has been delayed, one cannot help but wonder if this was part of the reason why the release date was pushed back nearly three months. Regardless, we shall have to see how the game shapes up next year.
