Loading Human Brings the Adventure to Oculus Rift
Indie developer Untold Games is about to blow your mind with the new gameplay trailer for their Sci-Fi adventure game, Loading Human. The game is a story-driven game which revolves around solving puzzles. Designed for use with the Oculus Rift and VR controllers like the STEM or Razer Hydra, Loading Human hopes to offer an unparalleled level of immersion. The game is a marriage of the ability to manipulate virtual objects with precision, and the scripting support to those objects to react in complex ways.
Having had to opportunity to briefly fool with the original Rift model myself, I can tell you that the sense of presence is incredible (even though the graphics were terrible). However, a virtual world can never be truly immersive as long as its limitations are staring you in the face. In a video game, you can only perform the behaviors the developers have anticipated; every interaction boils down to a deliberately crafted line of code. Until Virtual Reality can offer a fraction of the freedom of the real world, letting ourselves be fooled by the experience will remain difficult.
By crafting an experience around deliberate interactions with virtual objects, Untold Games takes baby steps towards the holy grail of VR immersion: a framework to automatically determine the behaviors of any and every possible object intelligently, based on its form and material properties. We are witnessing the first steps into the ultimate medium of control and expression, an experience indistinguishable from reality. I've been waiting for this my whole life, and I didn't even know it.
Loading Human will be released on Windows and Mac OS for compatible VR devices later this year.
I'll see you on the Holodeck, my friend.
