Levine Left Frustrated

After the surprise news of the closure of Irrational Games, and Ken Levine's plans for a new studio, apparently it wasn't the sudden change that it first seemed. When the original BioShock was released, it was loved nearly everywhere and Levine never had to defend his vision of Rapture. Fast forward to Infinite, and while initially it was well received, afterwards it was called out on the racism handling and the mundane combat.

Irrational was in a mess at the time, and Ken Levine spoke openly about the future to IGN, and looking back now, the signs were there. He was frustrated at the criticism of their handling of racism, saying it was not the main theme, but a pervasive thing of the era, Levine says. "Until fairly recently it was that society was just openly, and broadly, and depressingly, bitterly exclusionary and racist... People are people of their times. To deny that - to make a game in that time period and not reflect that - was just weird to me."

The whole development of Infinite was a disaster; with early screenshots having no reflection on the final game. As well as this, content was removed and replaced with other things and staff were arguing and leaving Irrational. "The only reason I've ever been scared to discard something is, do I have time to replace it? Time is always a constant pressure," said Levine. "The clock is always the hardest thing for me now as a games developer."

After scrapping so much from the game, and trying something new with Burial at Sea – brought a whole lot of new issues to defend, and give this insight as to why he is moving on. "You only have so many years on this planet, so to spend a ton of time going back and trying to polish a particular apple... I don't think that's necessarily healthy." I think the criticism was a bit harsh on Infinite, as I found it quite enjoyable. What did you think of BioShock: Infinite? Let us know below.

So, any game set in times of slavery or racism can't really use them as elements without going "THIS IS BAD OH MY GOD HOW BAD THIS IS YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE BADNESS", even though that might not be the main theme in the game?

Also, Infinate sucked because it was Call of Duty in BioShock draping, a mostly linear mob shooter that only got praised because of how pretty Columbia was and... that chick, forgot the name.

Of course. But there's a difference between presenting and commenting on an actuality, and using it as an easy way to explain away plot elements and character motivation. If ever there was a case of not what they did, the way they did it, this would be it

I agree with him about that. It would seem very strange to have Columbia's society only with their weirdness, but lacking the vices of USA during those time.

Harsh maybe, but not unjustified. His "that's how it was" excuse just makes him seem like a bigger douchebag

The game was fun and enjoyable overall but the FPS mechanics were quite lacking.
