Lara Survives Siberia in Rise of the Tomb Raider Demo

If there's anything that Crystal Dynamics enjoys doing, it's putting Lara through the ringer, forcing her to undergo quite the elaborate sequence of brutal deaths in the previous installment, Tomb Raider. During E3, Rise of the Tomb Raider was teased via a harrowing sequence where she scales an ice wall, nearly solo, until an avalanche sweeps her away. The next video, shown at a closed-doors event at E3, is what happens next.

Lara's adept survival skills are on show here, in what looks to be quite the open world, set in the frozen Siberian tundra. Crafting is making an appearance, in the form of collecting flora, which can be used to craft weapons, ammunition, or simply stay alive. Weapon upgrades too use items collected, and there appears to be some sort of skill tree, though it wasn't shown what might be involved there. Lara seamlessly uses the environment to set up kills, such as climbing trees for better vantage points, and creating makeshift fuel bombs with gas cans.

Not only that, but the game looks like it will involve actual tomb exploration this time around, which was a criticism of the previous installment. Beyond that, the game looks quite good, with AMD's dynamic hair rendering system, TressFX shown off in full force, along with quite the array of lighting effects. Rise of the Tomb Raider is set for a November 10th, 2015 release date for the Xbox 360/Xbox One, with a PC version surely to come sometime thereafter.
