Keeping It In The Family

A new trailer for Assasin's Creed Syndicate went live yesterday, focusing almost exclusively on the twinned protagonists, Evie and Jacob Frye, their bond to each other and their bond with the city of London itself. Check it out above.

From the time period, to the land marks and the slang, the trailer practically waxes lyrical about its setting. Being a Brit myself, this trailer makes me tentatively excited. I’m excited because, c’mon, assassins in London? Yes please! Tentatively so because... Evie and Jacob are siblings but they clearly have similar but distinctly different British accents. Perhaps this will be a plot point later or perhaps they’ll sound a lot more alike in the actual game and this trailer just isn’t a very good example of that. What I’m trying to say is that I’m hoping for a setting a little less ‘Hollywood British’ and something a bit more recognisable. As a feminist, I’m also tentatively excited about Evie as a protagonist. I’m excited because I’m never going to say no when given the option to play a lady assassin in London. Tentatively so because... well, three words: Assassin’s Creed: Liberation. Liberation was by no means a terrible game but it certainly had its problems and, for a number of reasons (such as first being released on the PSVita and then having a dodgy port on the PC), it is certainly not one of the most popular entries in the Assassin’s Creed series. All of that said, with the Assassin Creed’s track record with female protagonists duly noted, I’m going to remain optimistic. After all, I’m already interested in Evie as a character and we know next to nothing about her at this point. Watch this space for more details as they are released (I know I will be).
