In the wake of the rather disappointing news that EA has the sole rights to make games based on the Star Wars franchise, former Avalanche Studios - the guys behind the Just Cause games - manager Oskar Burman tweeted 'Actually, wanting to work with SW goes deep in Swe. Long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we almost got that deal when I was at Avalanche', to which Avalanche founder and Chief Creative Officer Christofer Sundberg replied 'If they had given us the deal back then Lucas Arts would be alive today. A massive SW open world game! We would have rocked it.'
Since Burman worked with Avalanche between April 2005 and May 2009, it's likely that the talks started and ended within that time period. All we can do is imagine the levels of awesome that would have been involved.

Wouldn't be that much different from when Obsidian made KotOR 2 really. I don't believe there's anything illegal in setting the premise and paying other people to do the work for you. Most studios hire on new people specifically for one job anyway. It's the same principal, just hiring on a full studio rather than disparate elements. In fact, hiring in a whole, or even part, of another studio is a for more efficient method because you know they're all familiar with each other and already know how to work together.
Just...just make it happen damnit!

I'm pretty sure they are allowed to partner up with other, outside developers. They'd still be the publishers, so.
