GDC: Reducing OpenGL Driver Overhead
GPU manufactures are cooperating with Microsoft on lower overhead DirectX 12. However, they are not putting their eggs in one basket. Specialists from AMD, Intel and Nvidia have made a talk about the possible performance improvements in OpenGL.
During the presentation, several claims and methods were presented. The OpenGL should provide 1.3x performance boost, compared to the current Direct3D without much effort. Careful programming can provide much more. Some specific cases were mentioned, where the overhead was reduced by 8, or even 15 times. The overhead reduction is important to improve performance on desktop PCs, while the mobile platforms benefit from an improved battery life. It will be interesting to see how well these advanced OpenGL techniques compare to DX 12.
