Fantastically Active Timeorzea

With the third phase of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn behind us, let's take a look at the most recent addition to the gameplay. I am speaking about the FATE system, which is discussed by two developers Naoki Yoshida and Toshio Murouchi in the above video.

Simply speaking, the Full Active Time Event system is nothing new to the genre – if you are familiar with Guild Wars 2's event system, or the Arkfalls from Defiance, you will get it in no time. An event starts on the map, either in form of a marked area you have to enter or an NPC with a sign over their head, and the nearby players join their forces to beat it. Realm Reborn will include all the recent improvements developed in the field – the events will scale up or down, depending on the number of players taking part, the high level characters will need to sync down to earn any rewards and some events will chain.

The idea is far better than the semi-surrealistic solutions implemented in the original FFXIV, but one could wonder if Square came up with the main problem it poses – the repetitivity of the events, which makes GW2 die out more and more as you read this. Let's hope they did!

The video gives some more examples of the game's combat system, which seems more MMO-like than the one found in its predecessor (and thank God!). With a job system, allowing you to develop your class into more advanced ones and some well-known elements like Chocobos or Hi-Potions, I dare say that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn may not only amend the mistakes of the previous game, but also become one of the more interesting MMOs out there!

P.S. Can you recognise the music theme in the background of the devs talking in the studio? Awww!

That...is some kind of arse backwards logic. But okay

@Bobfish - if nothing changed, and I do not think it did, Square will keep the game subscription-based, like the original Final Fantasy XIV. Why?

"One of the promises we originally stated was that we would release the game with a subscription model. So to regain the trust of our players we must of course fulfil this promise."

It's starting to look pretty good akshully. I might just give it a try. 'Specially if it adopts the F2P path
