Energy Hook Launches $1 Kickstarter

By Mokman11-05-2013

So some of you may be familiar with the recent controversy regarding Penny Arcade's $10 goal for it's Kickstarter to revive the Penny Arcade Podcast recording, the creation of their comics. Now it seems that the trend is catching on, with a game developer that previously worked on the web-slinging and occasional brawling simulator Spider-man 2 posting up a Kickstarter with a goal of $1.

Energy Hook is a "grapple-and-swing-and-run-on-walls-for-style game by Jamie Fristrom, creator of the Spider-Man 2 game", and I have to admit, it sounds like exactly what I want. One of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I ever had was admittedly screwing around in Spider-man 2 swinging around buildings. However, this $1 goal is creating a lot of controversy, with some arguing for its honesty, and others blaming Fristrom for the lack of a proper development funding plan. What do you think?

It feels a LOT like this guy just wanted a bunch of free advertising. Which isn't a terrible thing, but he's gone about it in a pretty douchey way

The issue is pretty difficult to address, I feel that by its very nature Kickstarter should really try to keep the spirit of being a 'Kickstart' for games that are never going to get made if they are not crowd funded.

I like to think that having a higher target to aim for and a barrier of entry to surpass stops these sort of Kickstarters that amount to someone asking for money or using the system as a place to pre-order games. I would say that the Penny Arcade example is still more damaging to proper crowd funding than this particular project though.
