Eidos Montreal Cancels Imaginary Game
Eidos Montreal, known for their work on Tomb Raider(The new one) and Deus Ex: Human Revolution have cancelled an unknown IP. The fact that it was both cancelled and never announced makes you question its existence, but according to Kotaku it was linked to the Japanese side of Square Enix. With this in mind, a recent OXM interview with Final Fantasy director, Yuji Abe, brings up an interesting theory about this IP:
"Obviously, Square Enix bought out Eidos a number of years ago, and now we have direct access to American development teams. That's certainly been discussed within the company, the possibility of say, Eidos or maybe someone else to look after or maybe take on the Final Fantasy series."
This cancelled IP could have been an Eidos made entry in the Final Fantasy series. Of course, this is just cold hard speculation and in no way fact. It's possible that there was no "secret" game in the first place, and it was just a mistake by some guy in Square Enix who wasn't paying attention in a meeting. For all we know, this is could be some grand marketing stunt on the behalf of Square Enix. As cool as it would have been to see a different developer take a crack at a Final Fantasy game, I doubt Square Enix would let their biggest movie fran... I mean game franchise be touched by somebody else.
