EA Shuts Down Maxis, SimCity, and Spore
Well it was a fun 12 years, but it's time to turn off the lights and put the key under the door. #RIPMaxisEmeryville

EA, everybody's least favorite publisher, has effectively shut down Maxis, the developer of the SimCity series, Spore, and plenty of other titles.
According to an EA representative, ""Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location,"
That "Emeryville location" that they're "consolidating" was essentially Maxis's headquarters by the way, as well as the studio behind the development of their most successful series, SimCity.
Technically, Maxis isn't gone, they're branding will live on, but the Maxis people are familiar with is being consumed by EA at this point. while the brand lives on, it's still sad to see Maxis go like this, and Guillaume Pierre's tweet (above) doesn't make it sound much happier.
Nobody knows what EA or Maxis is going to do from this point, but EA has promised us that "These changes do not impact our plans for The Sims" and that their Sims DLC will be coming along "soon."
Goodbye Maxis Emeryville and other studios, The Sims, SimCity, and Spore were all good games for the most part, and you will be missed.
