DayZ is Getting a Standalone Release!

Mod sensation DayZ, responsible for sending ARMA 2 sales sky-rocketing, is receiving a standalone release, as a post on the official DayZ tumblr states.

"That’s right, this is actually happening - DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago."

For those worried about what will happen to the current mod version, main man 'Rocket' states that "Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game".

Details are scarce at the moment, but answers are promised over the coming weeks. We'll keep you updated. In the mean time, let the rampant speculation as to how the full game version will work begin!

For the full word from the mod developer, see the official tumblr:

@Leigh - Very good point. My words were literal - a story MODE. Keep the game exactly how it is, but add a little mode that lasts a few hours, but has a little story to it. Maybe a reason for the outbreak on the island... just for those who enjoy a game/mode with an end goal.

@IAmRuby I find DayZ is all about the stories you can create yourself through the world and gameplay. Interacting with other survivors and all that good stuff. I do however think that more background would help, such as scrawling on the walls, notes left behind - that sort of thing. Like how every cave or dungeon in Skyrim tells a story.

Hopefully there will be a Story Mode thrown in, giving the survival and exploration an extra level of immersion
