Darkness Returns

Last month we told you about the remastered re-release of Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder. Now we return with news of a Director's Cut for the sequel, Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage. The re-release has made its way onto Steam here.

In the sequel, players once again step into the shoes of police detective Howard Loreid as he tries to unravel the strange events of his past and the mystery of indescribable, Lovecraftian nightmares. So far, so familiar but the sequel is different to its predecessor in a number of ways. For one, it isn't point-and-click like the first game, but rather fully 3D so you can roam freely within the environments.

The Director's Cut is an updated version of the game, with some new additions, tweaks and polishes. Onur Samli, of Zoetrope Interactive, said, "With the opportunity to present the game on the Steam platform, we created a much improved version, enhancing graphics, adding new locations and new puzzles; making the game a great experience for both new players as well as those familiar with the series. We really hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did creating it."
Developer Zoetrope Interactive says the game "creates an unsettling atmosphere, making the player feel uneasy throughout the game, without reverting to actual gore." It sounds like this title is going for a much subtler brand of horror. So, if you find yourself fatigued by the over use of jump scares in some horror games today, maybe this game will be a breath of old-made-fresh air.

Like when the first game made its way to Steam, the sequel is available at a temporary 15% discount. So, if you're interested in playing this golden oldie, you better hurry and pick it up.
