Dark Matter is a 2.5 D side scrolling sci fi survival horror and the 2nd game from developer Interwave Studios. Check out the initial story cinematic above.

The game's visual style combines hand painted art with modern rendering technique that certainly sets it apart from other titles of the genre. Dark Matter appears to approach gameplay differently too, with unscripted encounters and intelligent enemies that change their behaviour in response to changes in their surroundings. Light and dark also feature heavily in the game and not only in its visuals; enemies behave much more aggressively when light is shone on them but then no one wants to fight these outer space beasties in the dark and this gives rise to what looks like a very interesting style of play. Enemies also drop resources but instead of dropping readily useable items you must craft your own from what is dropped. Through the crafting system you can upgrade your weapons too. It all sounds very promising.

Dark Matter doesn't have a set release date yet but you'll be able to wrap your space tentacles around it and hug its face some time this autumn.
