If you know who Blizzard is you also probably know that they have quite an interest in the e-sports scene. StarCraft is one of the juggernauts in the e-sports world so this should not come as a surprise. Earlier this year IGN announced that they would not be operating the e-sports league in the future but no word of potential buyers were known at that time. Now Blizzard has announced that they acquired assets and technology to support "online content initiatives."

A number of former employees will be staying on to utilize their skills with the Blizzard e-sports team while others will be branching off to do their own thing. Previously Blizzard seemed to be uninterested in acquiring the IPL but it really makes sense when you look at it. This will create uniformity in the StarCraft 2 e-sports world which greatly benefits Blizzard. Hopefully this just means that e-sports will continue to grow and expand, that is a good thing.
