Are you 'King Kidding me?! (Updated)
So, King are trying to sue Stoic. Who are King you might ask? Those what made them games. Candy Crush Saga and all that. You know the chaps right? Why are they suing Stoic? Because The Banner Saga is infringing on their copyright.
I am absolutely serious.
According to a document that runs to a dizzying 32 pages (be aware it's a .pdf) dear old Stoic willfully, and intentionally, chose the name The Banner Saga to cash in on the success of King's SAGA series. Perhaps someone should tell these chaps that copyright doesn't work that way. You can't just arbitrarily copyright a word, then go around suing the crap out of everyone who uses it. It just doesn't work that way.
At this point, we would usually make some kind of acerbic joke. But...just wow dude.
Let me simply end by saying, this nonesense is precisely the reason why Pixel Judge has a Frivolous Lawsuit tag.
Update: King have responded, via Kotaku.
"We do not have any concerns that The Banner Saga is trying to build on our brand or our content. However, like any prudent company, we need to take all appropriate steps to protect our IP, both now and in the future. If we had not opposed Banner Saga's trademark application, it would be much easier for real copycats to argue that their use of 'saga' was legitimate. This is an important issue for King because we already have a series of games where 'Saga' is key to the brand which our players associate with a King game."
I don't even...
