AC Was Supposed To Have Coop

It seems your time reliving your ancestors time in the Middle East assassinating Templars was supposed to be a less solitary affair according to Assassins Creed III's mission director Philippe Bergeron. While talking to OXM Bergeron talked about a planned co-op for the first Assassins Creed. "Before we knew about the Desmond story and Animus link, we had a huge co-op component in there."

But it seemed they ran into problems explaining other people coming in to your ancestor's memories. "There was no way to reconcile having multiplayer or co-op in an ancestor's memories. Your ancestor lived his life in a certain way, so assuming you had branching storylines, it creates a paradox. It didn't fit."

Besides not fitting with their new story, there were technical problems that put the final nails in the co-op feature's coffin. "It just became too hard to do: the engine couldn't support it, and then the metaphor we had above it didn't support it. Co-op was one of those big things at the beginning that just didn't make sense in the end".

I was happy with AC1 as it was. Really loved it and didn't find it repetitive.

Awh, that's too bad. They still did implement a form of co-op though in Assassin's Creed 3
