Elder Scrolls Online recently interviewed the first person to become emperor. The interview hints at keys to success and by discussing how he, personally, rose to the top.  

First, don't go in alone. Find a supportive guild that will help you in your endeavours. Look for somewhere you fit in and belong. A group who will work with you for the benefit of having someone in the lead is best. They'll have to be a team and get along. 

It's important that you stay rested and make sure to eat in the meanwhile. Energy is essential when putting forth so much time and effort. 

Determination is of the utmost importance and you can't simple quit because you're not at the top of the leader board. Remember, no one started there. It took lot of hard work. 

Last, don't get stuck in just with playing just one cookie cutter character. Explore, try something new. You may find other things work better for you.
