3 New AC’s Under Development
Ubisoft have vowed to release a new Assassin's Creed game every year for the foreseeable future and to innovate with each iteration. Oh goody.
Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, didn't say much else about the 3 future Assassin's Creed projects in developement now, though it's safe to assume that one of them will be this year's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Whilst we here at Pixel Judge quite liked the series' previous entry, Black Flag looks like it will offer something different again; Assassin's Creed III introduced us to an all new, conflicted, half-British/half-Native-American assassin and was mostly set on land whereas Black Flag is set across the islands of the Caribbean Sea with pirates! The earlier entry had some highly praised naval combat sections whereas this next entry appears to involve a lot of open-world sailing and exploration. But beyond Black Flag we don't know a great deal about what the future holds for the franchise.
But Guillemot did say at E3, "We are making sure the teams who are creating the different iterations have enough time—two years, three years, so that they can take risk [sic] and they can change the concept enough so that it can be appealing and fresh."
He continued, "Really, what we see is that we can have the capacity to regularly come with innovation. That is, for me, the formula: if you can really change the game on a regular basis and bring in innovation your fans want a product very regularly. Our job is to make sure the teams have enough power, enough energy and enough time to take the necessary steps to create a high quality game."
Previous entries in the franchise have had their main campaigns developed by multiple, rotating teams within Ubisoft Montreal and things like multi-player as well as specific side missions are made by satellite studios.
It's comforting to hear that future entries in the series will be anything but a rush job and that Ubisoft are actively attempting to innovate with each entry in the hopes of avoiding franchise fatigue. But what do you think? How does an entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise each year for the next few years sound to you? What periods of history do you hope the games will cover in the future? Personally I'm hoping for an entry that follows the life of an assassin that's a housewife in the 50s (unlikely but a girl can dream). Let us know your own thoughts in the comments below.
